Performance

A lead is a beginning. Measure what happens next.

Why the cheapest enquiry is not always the most valuable—and how to build a more useful view of campaign performance.

Start with an agreed definition.

A form submission tells you that someone completed a form. It does not tell you whether they are a suitable customer, can be contacted or have a need you can serve. Before evaluating a campaign, agree what qualifies an enquiry for your business. Keep the definition specific enough for two people to apply it consistently.

A useful starting point is relevance, contactability and a realistic next step. The exact criteria depend on the offer. Record the qualification rules beside your reporting so a change in the rules is not mistaken for a change in performance.

Follow a small number of stages.

Map the journey from enquiry to a qualified conversation, proposal or booking, and eventual customer outcome. You do not need an elaborate dashboard to begin. A well-maintained CRM or controlled spreadsheet can make the missing context visible.

Assign an owner to each stage. If a lead remains unreviewed, that is different from a lead that is unsuitable. Record response and qualification separately to avoid drawing the wrong conclusion about the campaign.

  • Enquiry received
  • Contact attempted
  • Qualified or disqualified with a reason
  • Next step agreed
  • Business outcome recorded

Compare like with like.

A channel that creates a lower volume of enquiries may still produce a higher proportion of relevant conversations. Review counts, qualification rates and cost per qualified enquiry together. For longer buying cycles, allow enough time for an enquiry to progress before comparing cohorts.

Document changes in spend, offer, landing pages and follow-up capacity. These changes may explain the result more clearly than the platform’s headline conversion count. Small samples also need caution; one good week is not evidence of a dependable pattern.

Use the reasons to choose the next test.

Disqualification reasons can guide practical improvements. Irrelevant service requests may point to unclear ad copy. Enquiries outside your service area may require targeting or location messaging changes. Good enquiries that receive a late response may need an operational fix.

The purpose of measurement is a better next decision. Build a review where marketing and sales can look at the same definitions, discuss the evidence and agree one change worth testing.
